Library Fines and Charges

The University Library imposes a fine for loans which are not returned to the Library by their due date.  These fines are imposed in order to encourage timely return of Library materials so that all students can enjoy fair and equitable access to these Library assets.

The rates of these fines have not increased in the last decade and it seems that they no longer present sufficient incentive for materials to be returned on time.  This seems especially problematic in the case of 'Reserve' loans (high demand items like textbooks and set readings).

The rates of these fines will be increased with effect from 14th April 2008.  Any books due on or after this date will attract the following fine rates:
  • Reserve items - $2.00 per hour
  • All other loans - $1.00 per hour
Fines will accrue at these rates until the item is returned.  These rates are in line with the minimum rates charged at other universities in Australia.

If a Reserve item is not returned within 24 hours of the due time it will be deemed lost. Other loans will be deemed to be lost after 28 days.  Where an item is deemed lost the borrower will be charged for the full replacement cost and an administrative charge. The administrative charge is $25.00 per item.

Library services are suspended once a loan is overdue or where a borrower owes $10.00 or more in Library fines.  Statements of results will be with-held at the end of semester where loans remain outstanding or where a borrower owes $10.00 or more in Library fines.

All notices relating to the University Library are sent via the University's Webmail service.  You should check this daily to ensure that you do not miss Library notices and requests to return materials.

If you want more frequent reminders of when your Library Loans are due you should try using the LibraryElf .  You can read more about this service here .

Questions about Library fines should be directed to the Library you normally use.  A list of Library contacts can be found here.
