Use of LexisNexis AU

The University has been approached by the LexisNexis Australia General Manager about the use of our subscription by non-academic customers contrary to our licence agreement.

It is important to remember that the University does not own the content in services like LexisNexis AU and our access to them is dependent on our adherence to the licence agreement we have signed with LexisNexis AU.

To clarify some important aspects of the licence I will quote from the advice from LexisNexis AU:
The LexisNexis AU licence agreement does not allow the use of university subscriptions by students and lecturers for non-academic or commercial research purposes. This includes:
  • Students using their academic access to University LexisNexis AU services in order to conduct research for law firms;
  • lecturers using their academic access to University LexisNexis AU services in order to conduct research for their corporate work;
  • Ex-students and alumni accessing University LexisNexis AU services
These terms and conditions apply to all of the University's subscription databases, e-journals and e-books.

The University will be taking steps to detect and respond to instances of non-academic usage of our licenced resources. We are obligated to do this by the terms of our licences and by a need to ensure that these resources continue to be available to legtimate users and for legitimate purposes.
