The complaints have often centered on the use of these PCs for activities which are not study related such as playing online games, watching YouTube and using Facebook.
The PCs in the Library are provided for study and research purposes and we ask that you use them in this way. Out of respect for your fellow students we would ask that you keep your interactions via Facebook to a minimum and that you refrain from playing online games and browsing sites like YouTube.
Some students have suggested that we block sites that are related to study and research. This is technically possible but is not our preferred option. The Library has developed a series of recommendations and is working with IT Services to see how access to network services from the Library can be improved.
In the meantime we would point out two issues:
Those of you with a laptop can take advantage of the wireless network in each of the libraries. The staff at the IT Service Desk in the St Teresa's library can assist you to connect to the network (The Library has made recommendations to IT Services about ways in which the network can be improved, most obviously by enabling printing over the wireless network).
The St Teresa's Library has a 'quick print' terminal next to the printers. This can be used to print from a memory stick or thumb drive (the Library has suggested deploying these in each library and adding some quick access terminals)
We will keep you informed of developments in terms of desktop PCs and network services.
