To prepare the building for the redevelopment we have begun working on the Library collections. Approximately half of the collection will need to be boxed during the build phase, with the other half of the collection remaining on the library shelves but inaccessible to borrowers and Library staff.
Given the magnitude of this task we will need to begin boxing the collection in the week commencing 25th October. From the 25th we will be boxing the print serials. Once the serials are boxed we will begin to box the materials in the main collection. This will happen in the week commencing 1st November and the materials will be boxed from the 400s through to the 900s in sequential order, with the boxing likely to take two weeks.
Once we begin boxing materials they become inaccessible for borrowing. In order to minimise the impact of this upon staff and student research the Library will be:
• Providing an extended loan period for any materials borrowed after the 1st of November. Anything borrowed after this date will not be due to be returned until the 7th of February 2011, the week after the Library is due to reopen.
• Relocating items that we think students to have access to for Summer Term units to a temporary library in building ND4 for the duration of the construction. We will send out more details about this closer to the opening date for the temporary Library.
We are also asking that you return any books you don’t want to hold over the summer period as soon as possible. This will enable us to place them back in the collection before we lose access to the building for the summer.
All of the Library’s digital collections and services are, of course, unaffected by the construction. Likewise staff and students will continue to have access to the Craven and Galvin Libraries during the construction phase.
