Where do unwanted Library books go ?

It is an inevitable fact that the Library withdraws books from its collections.  Generally we do this because the books are in poor condition or because they have been superseded by newer versions.  This leaves us with the dilemma of what to do with the books we withdraw.  Where possible we re-house the books with other libraries that will still find them valuable in their collections.  In late 2014 we were able to offer a collection of medical textbooks from the Galvin Medical Library at our Fremantle Campus to a the ESUT Medical School in Enugu Nigeria.  Here is a photo of the books arriving at their new home.

Library opening hours at the Fremantle Campus for 2014.

(Fremantle Campus Only)

Library at the Fremantle Campus consists of three individual libraries.  Each library has different collections and facilities but are open to all students regardless of their school affiliation.

We track the attendance in these libraries as the primary evidence for determining what opening hours should be offered in each location.  We also survey students about their requirements in terms of services and factor the comments made into our decision making.

This evidence we have points to the fact that attendance during weekday evenings across the three libraries is relatively low (and sometimes in single figures for the evening).   While we don’t doubt the value of the service to those who are in attendance we are mindful that it seems wasteful to light and climate control three buildings for a few people.  Attendance on the weekends is higher and our data indicates that you would stay longer on the weekend if you could.

With these attendance patterns in mind we have changed the opening hours in 2014 in the following ways:

  • Closure of the Craven and Galvin libraries from 6pm on weeknights during teaching (this means that you can now borrow Reserve collection items from both of these libraries from 4pm on weekdays and keep them until 9am the following day)
  • Retention of the 10pm closing in St Teresa's and extension of the Friday closing in St Teresa's to 8pm during teaching (this service now begins earlier than in previous years - from 28th Jan - and runs until 21st Nov inclusive)
  • Employing two staff at the desk in St Teresa’s to improve service at this library after hours
  • Extension of weekend hours at all three libraries to 5 hour opening slots
  • Opening of Galvin from 8am on the weekends*
  • Opening of Craven until 7pm on the weekends*
  • Opening on Public Holidays other than those which are mandated University Holidays (during teaching this is Good Friday and Easter Sunday)

*this means you can access the library from 8am until 7pm on both Saturday and Sunday

Variations to Library Services (Fremanlte Campus)

On Saturday 8th February 2014 Fremantle is host to the St Jerome's Laneway Festival.  The Festival will take place in the West End necessitating the closure of Mouat Street and Croke Lane and as a result the Bateman Courtyard.

As a result of these closures we will not have access to the St Teresa's Library on Saturday 8th February and will provide Library services that day from the Galvin Library.

On 8th February the hours for Galvin Medical Library will be 8am to 5pm.

Closure of Galvin Medical Library (Fremantle Campus)

The Galvin Medical Library will be closing for a week from Monday the 8th July, re-opening on Monday 15th July. During this time the library will undergo some renovations and some repairs to improve the Information Desk.

The St Teresa's and Craven Law Libraries will remain open during this period, and all students and staff are welcome to use these libraries. If you wish to access an item from the Galvin Medical Library during this closure please email your request to fremantle.galvinlibrary@nd.edu.au or ask staff at the Information Desk in either St Teresa's or Craven Law Library and they will arrange to have the item collected for you.

We apologise for any inconvenience that this closure may cause.
